Hello… is this thing on… Ever since I said I wasn’t going to talk about work on here anymore it seems people have left. Funny thing about blogs... you need to write in them or people don’t come back. I can’t say how often I will post but I should really talk about some interesting things happening in my work life.

A few months back GameTap, a subsidiary of parent company Turner; announce that Uru Live would return this holiday season. A few former co-workers asked me what I thought of the announcement. How should I feel? GameTap was reviving a product I had obsessed about for years. They were bringing life back to a product that I was hired at Cyan Worlds for. GameTap was going to give a chance to something that some in the gaming community said was a failure. How was I supposed to feel?

The truth of the matter is I was very upset when Uru Live was canceled the first time around. This might have shown thru in some cryptic blog posts at the time. I felt like so many that it wasn’t given a chance. I can’t blame any one individual for the demise of Uru Live the first time around. It happened. It was weird that as soon as it was canceled I wasn’t worried about the product anymore, but my own job and my co-workers being laid-off. I thought I would be the first to go. Someone like Bill or Tony pulling my aside one afternoon and saying “well Ryan I have some bad news”. That never happened. Of course most of us know the rest of the story. Expansion packs and Myst 5 and then the closure. Then we here the news… Turner is interested in working with Cyan. Uru Live is coming back this holiday season.

Yes, the closure the first time around was heartbreaking. As a community we really need to see this time is different. I can still see many in the community worried that it won’t launch again. Worried to get excited for something all over again and then see it fade away.

I am here to tell you it's different this time.

It just feels different. Here is an example – David Reid, Vice President of marketing at GameTap, taking time out of his very busy schedule to have a meeting in the cavern with the community.

Other folks like Trent and Ron who really want to see Uru Live take off and become the product we know it can be.

Finally, you have Blake who can see potential in a product, see an Uru community who still longs for the game they believe in and help make the dream of Uru Live’s return a reality.

It’s getting late here and I’ll probably have to go thru this tomorrow and correct all the typos, but let me tell you why I am really writing tonight.

How much do you want Uru Live?

Recently, Cyan Worlds, Inc. made a post asking the community to sign up for GameTap. We wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t going to help Cyan and Uru Live in some form. I understand the reasons some have decided to refrain from signing up at this time. I could explain the many reasons why you should sign-up for GameTap, but instead I’ll explain why I signed up GameTap.

GameTap is allowing a game that I obsessed about for years to return. They are bringing back to life a product that from the first time I heard about it made me want more. I need to show my support as a fan and not as an employee of Cyan Worlds, Inc. When Uru was happening the last time, I joked that if we sold 1,000,000 boxes I would get a tattoo. I don’t feel the need to make a contest to see how many people can sign up. Maybe I will do something crazy if we get a truckload of subscribers. Just remind yourself that GameTap is only about 35 cents a day. So I ask everyone in the United States.

How bad do you want Uru Live?

You want it bad? It’s time to show it. Link

All you international folks, for now, please sign Ron’s petition.

Thank you for reading

Ryan it is great to see you in full posting flight again!
This is an exciting time, and though I missed out last time, even I can feel the difference now... and the commitment already given by Cyan, GT and Turner is moving and addictive.
for me, I have signed everything I can so far, will be subscribing to Live as soon as it is possible for me - whether GT becomes available this far south of... well, anything!- am actively passing on the news and the vibe to everyone I can, and will enjoy every minute of the hype until it all becomes a reality
this is it, this time it will be right, and for a long time to come!

/me raises glass

CHEERS to Uru Live!!!

Hear hear!

Hey, it's back again, the GD-spirit!

I can be one of the worriers also, but only because this crazy, adventurous, wonderful dream called Uru means so much to me and the first loss hurt so bad.

Uru Live, here we come!

*jumps up and down in anticipation*

Well, if I hadn't already signed the International Petition, that post would have made me do it.

And if I could, I would already be signed up with Gametap.

:-)

Well, I did my part a couple months back when I signed up for GameTap to see what it was all about. In fact, I did it pretty much after Rand's announcement in early May. And honestly? GameTap is pretty cool. Especially when you consider the low monthly fee. I haven't even begun to "tap" its resources.

Sound words, Ryan. You're right, there is definitely a new energy in the air. I'm very much looking forward to the future. Uru's future.

I still drop by now and then.

Nice to see you so stoked about this I really hope everything goes right this time around, the fact that gametap were willing to do this is an indication that things will be different this time around.

Acctually I want It so bad that I'll expose all my students to URU; - in design class, in programming class and in 3d modelling class.
I will wildly recommend it like I was paid a million dollars to do so.

I signed up for GT a couple of days ago...Honestly it really looks good...I loaded Myst which I hadn't played since 1993. Thought I'd need a walkthrough but was amazed on how much I remembered.

The excitement of the Return of UruLive is electric and I'm sure it'll work this time around. The vibes are soooooo good. We as a community realize that we still need to do our part and bring those numbers in....and WE WILL.....

I raise my glass too
CHEERS Cyan, GameTap and Uru Live!!!

Ryan its great to see you posting again, even though you announced you were not gonna post about work i still popped in now & again ;-)

URULive was shadowed by a large dark cloud and was prevented to grow for over two years... Now with GameTap brings a new light of hope which hopefully will allow URULive to grow to its full potential or even beyond.

Ryan, you are right about the subscription to URULive's cheapness, compared to standard online game subscription fees of around $14.99... $9.99 is a bargain, and there in the US you arn't restricted to just one game which is amazing!

Though living in the UK i will still most definetly subscribe allongside World Of Warcraft which i play with my friends regularly.

My only hopes are that i will still be with my many friends i made in UU (Such as SG and LOTS LOTS more) and that URULive grows much more than it previously did.

Great to hear how you feel about Uru Ryan. I would have signed up for Gametap if I could have. Living in the Netherlands I had no choice but sign the petition Randomos so kindly set up. For now I hope it's enough.

Be sure though that I'll be there for Uru Live to launch!! I missed it too much :)

For those afraid to sign up...I've heard it's better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all. For me, the excitement of returning to the cavern now is worth almost any disappointment that the future might hold. Of course, I don't anticipate any such disappointment.

Are we there yet?

I signed up for gametap as soon as that offer was available.

How bad do I want Uru Live to come out?

I would have bought two subscriptions if it was neccessary.

Thanks for the inspiring words GD. I too have a strong feeling Gametap is a much different company than Ubisoft, and I am feeling very positive about them.

I signed up for gametap as soon as I heard that UruLive would be available on there exclusively. I do like some of the old Sega games but I've had some freezing problems during gameplay since the last update of gametap...who knows why. I hope that doesn't happen with Live but we'll figure it out if it does.

How badly do I want Uru Live? Very, very, very badly.
But not enough to use Windows. As a mac user, I find that there is little way to show my support. I filled out out the questionaire, but there was no "Would you be interested in a Mac/Linux version?" question. That needs to change. I've found petitions accomplish very little, but since the international petition is up, perhaps it's time for a mac one as well.

I signed up for GameTap today.

Faced with the reality of Live's closure, how many of us said we'd gladly have paid a subscription to keep Uru Live running, back in Prologue when it was free?
Here's a real chance to make that money talk.
We're glad to do it.
