Time of your life

Update 2006 - Cyan Worlds is alive and kicking.

Almost all of Cyan Worlds, Inc. was laid off today, including me. I know with the talent we have here people will find new places to go and do great things. It’s sad to see a company with such talented people to basicly expire. I don’t blame anyone for it happening. So today we had a company meeting in which Rand said some kind final words. Then we had a hamburger and goodbye gathering. Over the last few weeks leading to this point many of us had the hope that something would come up, but it didn’t happen. I will try to stay in Spokane as long as I can. I got some really good things going for me right now here and I hate to see that just dust in the wind.

So, as Green Days Time of Your life is playing on the company intercom system.

“Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test, and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time

It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.”

I did... (Raises glass) Here is to the future.

Peace.

Oh well. That's it then. No more Cyan.

I'm sorry I find it hard to be as philosophical as others have. Everyone else saw it coming, but I had to be the one who still believed that this world could be worthy of you. Boy, do I look stupid right now.

I know all the individuals involved will carry on doing wonderful and creative things. That goes without saying. There are no happy endings because nothing ends. Except it still feels like something has. Something important.

Please pass on my thanks to everyone for all the gifts you have given us. I wish you all every success, wherever you go.

And whatever happens, somehow, some day, D'ni will live again. If I have to write the damn Book myself.

I can't be philosophical about this ending. Who will write the stories now? Who will carry the torch for decency and creativity in games? The people of Cyan have ever been the only ones who understood.

Those of who have believed in these worlds are small minority. We're still here. Other companies give us guns and formulas. Cyan gives--well, gave--us wonder. Magic at the click of a mouse.

From the time of "The Manhole" to "Uru." We had Cosmic Osmo, Spelunx, and then Atrus, who drew us back again, and then again.

The world is a much poorer place without Cyan. What happens to the spirit now? I'd hoped that something would happen.

Ah, I'm just stunned. The real pain will come later... no more Cyan.

I am agast, and sad beyond what
my words can say, I have only these past months begun to experience MYST and now RIVEN,and
have found the Cyan work to be superb, magnificent, masterworks
of great art and sensitivity,
I refuse to accept the end, and I deny that it will be. There will be something, i am sure, and will keep this faith and through with total committment. I cannot accept that a creation of great light and quailty shall perish.
I mean this, I will not accept the end of Cyan, and you can please tell Rand I said so.

I am working on some new directions for both art and computer graphics design and intend to continue from where Cyan has momentarily left off, but I intend to see Cyan active again somehow somewhere.

Please be sure we can remain in touch with you in the time to come.

I discovered Myst with my four kids (then ages 11 to 2) just after a painful divorce. It really was a family experience and not just a game. We played together late at night around our one little computer. We took turns with the mouse, telling each other what to do. "Click on that!" "Hey, can you pick that thing up??" "Go back!"

My kids are now 21 down to 12, and we're going to play some of the Myst 5 together in much the same way the first weekend it comes out. Food, games, staying up late again, egging each other on....

It will be a fitting tribute to a game series that has always stood head and shoulders above all others for me.

Cyan and their worlds have been part of my life for so very long and the thought of their brilliance coming to an end makes my heart heavy.

I have escaped to the islands of Myst and to the worlds in the D'ni universe as a way to hide from the reality of the real world.

I have had the pleasure of meeting a great friend in Uru who has enriched my life and is teaching me patience the hard way... :)

No matter what the future holds, those are mine... forever... and you had a part in giving me that.

So to you and the rest of the Cyanists, thank you for my memories. They have been spectacular.

Who really knows what the future holds?

Good luck to you and anyone who has the pleasure of hiring you, in my opinion, they have gained a treasure.

Cyan always pushed the envelope with new ideas in how games should look and play.

I'll always remember meeting members of Cyan in URU/Prologue, and the fun I had there exploring and meeting others. The community that created will still live on, and so will the friendships I've made.

You created a place where people could be themselves, without having to hide. You should always be proud of that achievement.

I can only hope that you all find something to do now that brings a smile to your faces.

Take care, and see you again soon.

My first Cyan game was Spelunx, played at the local library. I moved on to Myst at my middle school and later to Riven et al. on my home computer. Thank you for the mental exercise and intricately crafted storylines -- and the gorgeous artwork from each game.

Studying the artwork and the puzzles taught me to always keep an eye open for things that are obvious only when viewed in the right frame of mind.

Given one last wish of Cyan/Ubisoft, I would ask for the source code to Myst Online (client AND server); as it is not a profitable commercial venture, allowing the D'ni community to further the universe would keep the Cyan legacy fresh for many years to come.

So long, Cyan, and thanks for the D'ni universe.

I don't even know what to say...

MYST, Riven, Exile, Revelation...

What a privilege it has been to experience the worlds you were able to provide us links to. As many have noted, these have provided wonderful memories of both solo and group explorations, the latter with friends and family huddled around the same monitor all participating in the experience together.

And then there was Uru.

With Uru, the worlds of Myst and D'ni were no longer in some far off place and time. It was the revelation of the worlds of Myst as they exist today and the ability to go be a part of it. When Uru was revealed I jumped on the first bus to New Mexico and was excited when I stepped off that bus and found my way to Zandi's Airstream trailer. And then climbing down into the cleft.. The Cleft!

What an amazing experience it was to make my way to the underground city of D'ni and meet other explorers who shared my sense of wonder. It was so fun to contemplate and speculate on the many things we encountered together and help each other devise solutions to problems. I got to explore an undergound city with people from all over the word.

It was a sad day when the funding for the D'ni expedition was cut. I must have taken a hundred photos on that last night in my neighborhood. With great reluctance I returned to the surface along with everyone else.

I'm glad that many continue to meet in the cavern with the links that Until Uru provides. I'm not able to utilize that ability myself. But I wish all who do the very best and that it continues to evolve.

A big heartfelt Thank You! to all the folks at Cyan Worlds who made this all possible. You are all an inspiration to me.

Onward and Upward!

Thank you b'fahsee. I wish the best of luck to all of the Cyantists. Even though Cyan is not a company anymore, it has left its marks on the fans. The Myst Universe will not drop dead. It will live forever.

What do you say when a legend dies? What can you give to those who were taken from? How do you support those who were felled?
The end of Cyan is not tragedy, it is not accident. It is another step in life's journey through time.
Do we mourn? Do we forsake those who gave us what we love? No, we remember them as the best of the best. The greatest of the great.
Cyan's legacy will never die. We will never forget what they gave us.
Light exists, but the tunnel is not complete. Their greatest work is our greatest ally.

The ending has not yet been written.

Good luck in you future endeavors. Grey, thanks for being such a great resource for the community. I hope y'all find new positions with exciting creative avenues to explore.

With the entire Myst worlds y'all created, with the games, books and the community, just know it was appreciated more than you'll know. I'm sure the finality of End of Ages will be more significant now, but it has been a great run, complete with the successes and disappointments. Oh my! I loved Myst very much (I bought it when it was still a Mac exclusive) and continued enjoying its sequels (and the novels and the CD soundtracks). In fact, I cursed Cyan when it failed to deliver the Mac version of URU, though later it was explained that it was the engine developers' fault. Never did I imagine that Cyan would close its door. Not even when I cursed Cyan would I wish it to close. This is a sad day, indeed.

Our hearts go out to all the families affected by Cyan's closing. In the midst of the sadness of this ending one note keeps sounding like a sustained note on a trumpet... we are totally convinced that there is too much talent and too many brilliant minds here to just quietly fade into the woodwork, so so speak. We are absolutely certain that, while these people may not work together on the same project ever again, the gaming world will yet see wonderful things from all of them.

I am heartfully saddened by this turn of events. CYAN created a world in which I could delve without fear of retribution if I made a mistake. It gave me the opportunity to learn from them and move on. I could go back and do things over and over again if need be. Sometimes it took me hours, even days to solve the challenges before me in Myst, Riven and Exile.

Then URU came, what a great pleasure URU has given me. And, to this day still does. The CYAN team gave me a world I could be my self in.
What great pleasure I have taken from URU!!!! The sense of Community and the Friendships I made in URU will go on with me until eternity.

Revelations was wonderful also and I am quite sure End of Ages will be as well.

Only true dreamers with love for their fellow man could create such wonders. And........As long as breath remains in any of you and those you touched, The ending has not been written.

Bless you all for the pleasure you have given so many.

Ryan, since I heard this news, I have been in something of shock, but nothing near, I am certain, the shock that you, Rand, and all the wonderful CYANists are experiencing.

This full impact of this layoff , and all that it implies, the breaking up of so much talent, imagination, energy, is incalculable. What you and the others created...well it has been magical.

Proof of that is the community that has sprung up around and as a result of the CYAN efforts. And what you and the others contributed to the whole Myst and URU experience is inseparable from the whole CYAN affect.

I will continue to have hope, that somehow, some way, all this talent can be reunited and like the phoenix CYAN, with all of the great and wonderful folks, will rise again. But beyond that, I also will be believing and hoping that should that reunion take longer then shorter, that whatever you and the others find will be equally if not more rewarding both personally and professionally.

One of the most painful things about reading this list of comments is to look at all the names, and to see many, many friends. Friends with whom I've explored the Cavern and Ages, friends with whom I've chatted and discussed issues in the forums... FRIENDS.

And the amazing thing is, if I were to find myself in a room with all these good folks, we'd be absolute and utter strangers. It's only through the magic of Cyan's worlds that we've been drawn together, and have met in a global embrace.

Many of you can trace your love of Cyan back to Myst; I go well before that, to the original Manhole. I was a convert from the moment I clicked that manhole cover on my little black-and-white Mac screen, heard the scraping sound, and watched the beanstalk emerge and climb heavenwards.

And who could have had the slightest inkling at the time where that beanstalk would lead?

What an amazing ride it's been. Each new title meant evenings immersed in beauty, mystery, good and evil; getting up early on Saturday morning and powering up the computer to try another approach I thought of while I wasn't quite awake.

I joined the Uru forum on May 10th of '03 before Uru even shipped, and joined many of you in speculating what this new shared adventure could be like. And Uru -- amazing Uru -- even with its flaws, just blew our socks off. I was elated, and rejoiced with so many others. And I was there until the last moment when the servers were shut down on Live. Now there's Until Uru, and the community has risen again...

But it hurts to know that the vision that gave us such amazing new worlds; all these new ways to see life; can all be brought down by such a vulgar thing as the lack of money. Unfortunately, business is business. But at the same time, dreams are dreams... and having to be subject to the cruelties of business just to bring our dreams alive is a bitter, bitter irony.

Especially when they fail.

Godspeed, Cyan.

In a dark world, it is so important to know there are islands of light. Warm places in the cold and rain.

A swirl of madness surrounds us, but here and there in its midst we find fragments of civility and pleasure, and for these we live. For these we go on.

In the great world, a well-made game may seem a small thing - as a book, a painting, a life itself can seem small. But in the pinpoint focus of a single mind, the universe is born. Infinite possibility.

Now a light has gone out, perhaps forever. Only hope remains, with its faint flicker.

You all may never really know how important you have been...though I suspect you're getting a hint here.

To Rand and all of you who created this bright haven in the darkness, shorah!

Thank you so much! May the Maker smile on you as you continue the journey.

The heart and soul of Cyan will always live in the beauty of the ages of Myst. One only need to loose themselves in an age to never forget the contribution Myst has made to the gaming world, and those those outside the gaming world who fell in love with Myst.

My best hopes fot a newly found linking book for all of you at Cyan.

I was wondering if Cyan could possibly leave their legacy behind by making the previous versions of Myst and Riven open source, so that the generous hearts of the open source community might be able to preserve the wonders created by Cyan...

Thank you so much for all the amazing stories.

Cyan brought amazing worlds to life while all the other companies were running around shooting things.

Myst was a warm up, greater things are yet to be!

I don't have much to say but it was a fun journey. The worlds of Myst, Riven, and beyond are a very key moment in my life. The worlds are real to me and even now I am rereading the novels. I hope some day like a phoenix, our desert bird will rise again.

Hi there,

Sad to hear that Cyan has closed down.

At the risk of sounding opportunist, I thought this might be a good occossion to let everyone know that Deadline Games are on a massive recruitment drive at the moment and we would love to here from anyone up for a little Scandinavian adventure. We are based in Copenhagen and are just about to launch our first console game (see www.totaloverdose.com).

Hope to hear from some of you....

Ryan,

You may not remember me, but I worked in QA about a year ago during the late stages of Uru. This is a shock, and I'm pretty saddened to hear about it. Good luck Cyan guys.

As a fellow Spokanite, I see this not only as a loss to the world wide gaming world, but also to our community right here in Spokane. I recently sent an email to the info addy at Cyan and I did get a response from Ryan. This surprised me very much considering the circumstances. I said not to give up, just hang in there. I've been there, done that and oddly, things have a strange way of turning around. I feel very confident about this and although Cyan may be down, I doubt that Cyan is out, not yet anyway. My best wishs to the Cyan gang, even though I live in Spokane and have never met any of the Cyan gang, I feel like have know you for a long time. With that, take care my friends...

This is so sad. I really grew up with Myst and Riven (and I recently bought Exile), I spent just a lot of time with my father playing these games. It were good times, dude.. we had so much fun back then. And just two days ago I watched the "Exile" making of... I actually feel a bit like crying. :(

Good luck to you and all the people at Cyan... your work surely won't be forgotten so quickly. At least I hope so.

My computer is a working instrument and I have too much going on to play games (don't want to sound condescending though). There has always been one exception.
I found Myst one day in a sale and I tried it out. I loved it. Since then, Myst has been the only game I ever play. I've tried others, but none of them give me the wonder that Myst does. Now, having just finished Exile (I know I'm way behind). I decide checking you guys out on the internet, and what do I find, that my real beginning is your end.
I'm reading all of this, have been for hours now, and I am literally in tears. Why do wonderful things always have to be killed off for money. Why does everything have to do with money.
But hope remeans. Wonder does not die, the people who made this will continue, be it elsewhere, but they will resurect, I am confident about that.
So I wish you all the best and hope to find you again soon.

Maybe i'm happy 'cause my job will be to build better and more immersive games, inspired from those from Cyan... but i hate the idea that we'll no more be daydreaming in front of our screens, staring at those wonderful -virtual- worlds...

I remember back in '93, our family decided to buy a better computer than the Mac SE. We finally decided on a IIvx. It was one of the first computers with the new-fangled CD-ROM drives.

Soon after that, my brother told me I had to get a GAME on CD-ROM now! So, I went with him to the store, not sure anything good would come of it. While I was eyeing Spaceship Warlock (which I never did get to play, lol), he had found MYST. "A surreal adventure that will become your world" that is a tall order, maybe it is a lie? maybe all the AMAZING pictures (look at the art even today it causes awe) COULDN'T be in-game.

... but it wasn't a lie ...

I put it in, and I was immediately lost. My brother and I played it, and it was such a treat! Such a HARD treat, not being able to even figure out the Tower *blushes* It was a full package: art, atmospheric sounds, perfect-mood music, puzzles that made my brain hum ... I have never had so much joy from frustration! lol

I couldn't wait for Riven! And, oh man, the frustration! but, it was too beautiful for words.

I have enjoyed the other out-house games, but they aren't as great as yours. I really hated the BAD frustration I got in IV with that stupid chair! #_# I was mad because AI knew you guys would never do that to me. I gave up on the game right there. Which is a shame.

I also REALLY REALLY wanted to play Uru! I even bought a PC to sit next to my Mac G4 just in case it only came out for PC. Well, dang it all! My PC's video card can't do pixel shading, and i dont' have enough money or knowledge to buy the correct video card. That hurt. It hurt more when I watched helplessly as Uru Live became Uru dead.

I tried Uru on my brothers computer when I was house sitting, and it worked there, but he didn't want it on there because it tok up too much room so as soon as they got back, he deleted it. *cries*

I will never forget the worlds you made for us to journey through. You managed what few creative people can, a real and new myth! I have all three novels and I can say truthfully that they are very good and enriching! I even got the audio book for the first one so I could hear the pronunciations (lol)

I also got the first comic book, I wish I had the other one taht managed to get out before you realized they got it wrong. I didn't get it as a comic fan, but a MYST fan.

I wonder if sci-fi channel ever made a movie about MYST and if they will release it on DVD for us all to marvel at?

I also want you to kow, even tho I am not rich, I spent my money on the LIMITED edition of MYST V! Just for you guys! Call it a going away, thanks for all the joy present.

I wish I could do more. I wish I had done more. I should have bought that better video card #_#

Anyway, all I want to say is that the dream of two brothers turned into this wonderful bigger company! You made millions of fans when you took the chance to follow your dreams. And now, it looks grim. I was also sad to see Green Tea end so quickly! I was really rooting for that, and I was glued to the web site!

This is already long enough. Thanks for everything, big and little. Thanks for Spyder as we waited for Riven, thanks for risking it all for URU, thanks for the miraculous art and sounds and music, thanks for bringing care and heart to gaming.

Thanks be to the Maker for giving me the destiny to turn a corner and see a book just lying there, and give me the curiosity to be pulled towards it. I opened it up, and I am sure I touched it ... but now that I am in it I know that it really touched me, to my very soul.

You made my life so much richer! I feel like I am loosing a gentle guiding friend. thank you all

Ah, I am telling my self that nothing lasts forever, but such thoughts cannot stop the feeling that I have been kicked in the stomach. This is more dissappointing than the break-up of the Beatles. In a way, Cyan's work has been just as artistic and certainly as innovative as was the work of the Beatles, in fact, more so, I think.

I am sure that all of you will continue to pursue greatness of innovation and artistry. I can only hope that some of you will find ways to grant us even greater gifts in the future. Please. We are waiting.

I've been a main-frame operator since '73; wouldn't have a PC in my home, until I heard about Myst. Bought one solely to play a game I heard of with non-violent challenging puzzles----I was not dissapointed.

Myst, Riven, Exile, Revelations, all provided many hours of immersive escape. Uru, still sealed in shrink-wrap, has lain on my catch-all table for better than a year now; waiting for a period when I sorely needed a deversion----and last week I opened it.

Live-gone......

Cyan, itself, gone.........

a new release, End (?) of Games, to look forward to, (as well as Uru, still haven't made it through initial 4 Ages)

But you shut it down?----envious of silly shoot-em-up money? Don't you know we cyanist fans would pay hundreds more than $50 measly bucks for those worlds of VI?-----

You have a market, Ryan, but I fear you under-value what your worlds are worth---sure, ppl will only pay $45 for "blood and guts"; but $45 is all that crap is worth (if that)------don't fold a company 'cause you have under-priced your product.

TO ALL THE WELL-WISHERS, "END IS NOT WRITTEN", YADA YADA'S-----tell this boob what you'd pay for Myst VI------(I'd cop 250)

I think that the mistakes that Rand the other Cyan people made were:

1) They should have stuck with the
2D game style such as Myst and Riven. The interface is so much simpler, you don't get motion sickness while moving around, the graphics are more beautiful (and photorealistic such as in Riven) and it feels more something like you could connect with. While Myst and Riven were accessible to non-gamers, Uru is something only for hard-core funs.
Too me, I would have wanted to have seen more Riven-like games.

2) They should not have grown the company so much. How can a company with 55 people sustain itself unless it keeps making a game of at least Riven-like success every year?

Just got back from vacation and heard the news. Very sad time for Cyan fans.

I agree with some of the comments being passed around but I give Rand a little more credit. It has got be be difficult to run a business when your product is on such a long development cycle. It doesn't allow for any failures (and we all have them). You have to have a major success every few years or you can't keep going.

I've enjoyed all of the Cyan games. Myst and Riven are probably the best all time games to me.

I'm hoping that this isn't the true "End of Ages".

Thanks Cyan for the great products.

This isn't the last we've heard of Cyan Worlds. In their own unique way, they've planted seeds inside the fan community, and that in itself will keep them alive. Their ability to create a world and a story that's so immersive will inspire all of us, and influence the way games should really be - true interactive media. We'll always remember you.

It breaks my heart to hear the news. I cried when i read this because it means there will be no more Myst. I wish the Cyan teams the best of luck and may you all be truly blessed for you have given many alot of fond memories to remember. There truly are somethings that money can't buy and the memories I have with the Myst series are some of those things and I would not trade them for all the tea in china or all the money in the world. I am forever thankful and indebted to the Cyan team for those memories. And it goes without saying that the End is never truly written. Vaya con dios.

Hi,

It was a bit of a shocker to hear the news about Cyan. I think back on it when I first played Myst on my PC and realized the potential the gaming world was when one could produce and play a game that did not require killing anyone. It made use of ones imagination. That was the key to its success and genious.

Although the end looks like it is here, and Rand has stated in the past that Myst would come to an end someday, it is sad. But don't think that book will be kept on the shelf forever

In my experience, good books do not stay on the shelf long, yes a little dust may gather, but someone will want to revisit it and either find inspiration for something new or relish delving in to something old.

In other words, the Myst world is too good to be finished and forgotten. Someday, not tomorrow or next year, but in the future someone will take that book off the shelf and make something new of it.

Cheers and all the best to all those that worked on Cyan's amazing Myst series. And thank you Rand Miller. Keep the faith!

At the age of way more than you want to know I bought Myst to "play" with my 5 year old nephew who was new to computers. All the other games looked awful to his protective aunt! We over the years tried Riven and he tried to play the 3rd game. Nothing matched Myst and the experience of our Saturday afternoons when his mom had to bring his sandwich to the computer because we were trying to solve a puzzle and couldn't stop. One day I called Cyan and explained I am too old and my nephew is too young and these puzzles are too hard! They sent me the guide book.. My nephew couldn't even read and he was desperate to solve the mysteries, so he learned. I saw a mind grow in front of my face. What an adventure! He is 16 today and a computer genius from his aunt's point of wiew! Last month I went out to find an update of Myst to enjoy with my grandson who is 5 and loves his computer. I have a new computer and an old game and I am crying!

excuse me for dropping in so late but I would like to express my profound shock and sadness upon hearing of Cyan's closing. For myself, the Cyan games have been the only games I've ever felt worth playing. All others are pale wannabees that never seem to be able to capture that elusive spark of energy that made Myst and especially Riven so utterly amazing. Thanks Rand and Robin, too. I know Robin left the pack after completing Riven to pursue other projects, but to this day I firmly believe it was the fusion of the 2 R's that made the games so good. Exile was good, not great and the following games were worse. As has been stated in an earlier comment, the dropping of the still image/slide show format Myst and Riven used to go with the so called 3D format was a mistake. 3D motion on a 2d screen simply does not work. Too, Robin's music in Riven still gives me goose bumps. In later games the music produced by trained musicians was plane awful, and how about the hiring of Peter Gabriel!!?? So I think that while the boarding up of Cyan appears to be the end, I predict this is the beginning of a long over due rest period for everyone involved, a chance to look back over the history of Cyan without pressure to be able to see clearly what worked and what didn't and out of it Rand will rise from the ashes with a new game that will harken the golden age of Cyan and it shall be known as Myst Phoenix. I am patient, I shall wait. Until then, as always, rob
